Widening Engagement with the Community
MENDAKI has established its own corporate website as another platform to keep the public informed of its programmes, activities
and services. At the same time, the website also provided the platform for the organisation to share information, knowledge and resources that would benefit the community.
Creating Online Conversations
The interactivity of online social networking sites such as Facebook and the proliferation of active web users had opened the door of opportunity for Mendaki to leverage on this platform to create awareness on the importance of spending within its means. Targetted at the net savvy youths and families, the Bijak Belanja,Sederhana berRaya, Hidup Selesa! Facebook group was created in August 2009 to encourage savings during Hari Raya spending. It provided the platform for members of the public to contribute their own creative ideas, tips and suggestions as to how they can recycle and save during Hari Raya.
Strengthening Partnerships
Mendaki works together with the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), Eurasian Association (EA), Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) to ensure that every Singaporean is able to keep pace with the changes in our operating environment and benefit from the economic progress of the country. Joint projects such as the Collaborative Tuition Programme, the bridging Programme, Community Tuition Fee Subsidy Scheme and Joint Job Fair, helped to build trust, confidence, tolerance and mutual respect between the different communities.
Expanding Harmony Circles
Another platform where MENDAKI contributed significantly is the promotion of inter-ethnic understanding. Racial Harmony was the celebration of the Inter-Racial Inter-Religious Harmony Nite1 in 2004. MENDAKI also participated in the signature event, the National Orange Ribbon Celebrations (NORC)2 to celebrate Racial Harmony. MENDAKI contributed about 2,000 pledges, an effort by staff as well as beneficiaries and volunteers. These pledges formed the sculpted Orange Ribbon Pledge Board inaugurated by Guest of Honour, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew as a permanent symbol of harmony and graciousness at Bishan Active on 18 July 2009. MENDAKI believes that Singapore cannot just be a collection of different communities. We must remain cohesive and continue to build our common Singaporean identity with each new generation. We can then become a more vibrant and cosmopolitan city, while strengthening our unique Singaporean values and character.
